A job listing goes through three states: draft, published, and closed.
Drafts
A new listing starts as a draft. Drafts are private — nobody can see or apply to one — and there is no limit on how long you leave it there. Write it in as many sittings as you like.
Three things a listing needs before it can go live
Publishing checks three gates, and the form tells you which one stopped you:
- A pay range, with both ends.
- A city, unless the role is remote.
- A verified company — see Verifying a company.
The third is the one that surprises people, because it is about the company rather than the listing: a brand-new company has to prove it controls its domain before any of its jobs can be published.
Why the pay range
A listing cannot be published without both ends of a pay range. This is deliberate, and it is the rule people ask about most.
The reason is simple: a listing without a range wastes everyone's time. Candidates apply, both sides invest in a conversation, and the number comes out at the end. We would rather lose the listing than the hour.
Two things are checked:
- Both bounds are present. A minimum without a maximum is not a range.
- The range is plausible. The maximum has to be at least the minimum, and no more than four times it. A range of 20,000 to 200,000 is not information — it is a way of technically complying.
A listing that fails any gate stays where it was: a draft stays a draft, and a closed listing you were reopening stays closed.
Published listings close after 30 days
A published listing stays open for 30 days, then closes automatically.
That is the market norm, and it is not only tidiness: a listing that has quietly been filled but still accepts applications is worse than no listing. Candidates spend real effort on a role that no longer exists.
You can close a listing early at any time, and you can republish a closed one — republishing runs the same three gates.
